2012 Tony Awards: “Clybourne Park” Scores Best Play, “Once” Nabs Best Musical

iStockphoto/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — At New York City’s Beacon Theatre Sunday night, Broadway’s best and brightest turned out for the 66th Annual Tony Awards ceremony.
Clybourne Park, the drama about race and real estate, was honored with a best play Tony, while Once, the song-filled Dublin-set production, was feted as best musical. The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman won Tonys as best revival of a musical and best revival of a play, respectively.
Once also won Tonys for best orchestrations, best scenic design of a musical, best direction of a musical, best book of a musical, and best lighting design of a musical.
The director of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, Mike Nichols, took home his sixth Tony for the revival.
Hugh Jackman was given a special Tony for his performances and his charity work, while Bernadette Peters was honored with the Isabelle Stevenson Award in recognition of her charitable endeavors.
How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris hosted the show, opening by performing with the cast of last year’s best musical, The Book of Mormon, and then doing a song and dance of his own, to a piece called “If Life Were More Like Theater.”
The show featured performances from the casts of Porgy & Bess — featuring best actress in a musical Tony winner Audra McDonald, who took her fifth trophy — and Newsies, which earned a best-score Tony for Oscar winner Alan Menken.
