The Detroit Red Wings traded the 32-year-old to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forward Andrew Murray and a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2014.

Stuart played his first six seasons as a Shark. In November 2005 he was part of a trade that sent him to Boston for Joe Thornton. He played for Detroit five of the last six seasons, and helped win the Stanley Cup in 2008.

Stuart’s family still lives in San Jose. He let it be known that he wanted to be closer to them. He has until July 1 to negotiate a contract with the Sharks before he becomes a free agent.

During his 13-year career, Stuart has scored 74 goals, 231 assists, and 489 penalty minutes.
