The new deal will go into effect beginning with the 2013-14 season. It will keep the 24-year-old Crosby in the Steel City through the 2024-25 season.

The new contract can’t be signed until Sunday, due to the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

“It was a deal that we talked about, and the longer term we thought was better for both the player and the team,” Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. “This is his third NHL contract with the Penguins, and it just felt appropriate that it would take him to a certain level in his career, to the end of his career.”

Crosby led the Penguins to their third franchise Stanley Cup in 2009.
