Jon Kopaloff/FilmMagic(LOS ANGELES) — Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are divorcing. The couple wed in November of 2006 in Italy and have a daughter together, Suri, who’s six.

In a statement provided to ABC News Radio, Holmes’ publicist declares, “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”

The union was Cruise’s third; he was previously married to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman. He has two adopted children with Kidman. It was Holmes’ first marriage.

Cruise famously declared his love for Holmes on The Oprah Winfrey Show in May of 2005 by jumping up and down on Oprah’s couch, which made him an object of ridicule.  The couple’s relationship has been plagued by gossip and rumors for years.

The split comes during a major upswing in Cruise’s career.  Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol was a huge hit, and despite the poor box office returns for his most recent film, Rock of Ages, Cruise himself received good reviews for his portrayal of ’80s rocker Stacee Jaxx.

Bert Fields, Tom Cruise’s longtime attorney, tells ABC News, “Katie Holmes did file for divorce yesterday. Tom Cruise is saddened by this news but is concentrating on his children.”  Another source close to the actor told ABC News that the filing came as a “complete surprise” to him, and so did the fact that Holmes is asking for “sole custody of Suri.”
