The left-handed Rodriguez has a 7-9 record with a 3.79 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP this season.

Rodriguez signed a three-year, $34 million contract with Houston before the 2011 season. The Astros will pay $1.7 million of the $3.4 million still owed to Rodriguez this season. After that Houston will pay $8.5 million in 2013. Rodriguez also has a $14 million player option in 2014. If he stays with Pittsburgh, the Astros will owe him $7.5 million of that.

In return the Pirates sent Triple-A All-Star pitcher Rudy Owens, pitcher Coltan Cain and outfielder Robbie Grossman to Houston.

The Pirates are trying to make the postseason for the first time since 1992 and are currently leading the National League Wild Card race.
