(NEW YORK) — Brad Pitt has become the latest celebrity to be “killed” by an Internet-spawned snowboarding hoax.
The rumor about the Moneyball star was started by a fake news source called Global Associated News, which claimed Sunday, “Witnesses indicate that Brad Pitt lost control of his snowboard and struck a tree at a high rate of speed,” while vacationing in Switzerland. The copy came complete with a picture of somebody being loaded into a medevac helicopter.
“Pitt was air lifted by ski patrol teams to a local hospital, however, it is believed that the actor died instantly from the impact of the crash,” claimed the website, which ran a tiny disclaimer at its bottom reading, “THIS STORY IS 100% FAKE!”
Pitt incidentally suffered the same exact fake fate as a number of stars, including Justin Bieber, Eddie Murphy, Keanu Reeves, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mickey Rourke.
