(NEW YORK) — A 33-year-old married father of three children was shot to death in his Salem, Indiana home last Friday night.
Police say the assailant was Michael Bayless’ three-year-old son.
From what investigators have been able to piece together so far, they believe that the toddler picked up the loaded handgun and that it accidentally discharged, fatally wounding Bayless.
Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said no one else was hurt during the incident. Bayless’ wife was also home when the shooting occurred.
Goodin asserted that it was a “tragic” example of someone leaving a loaded firearm within a child’s reach. Washington County Police will determine if any other adults were at fault in the shooting.
