Norm Hall/Getty Images(PHOENIX) — New York Mets rookie pitcher Matt Harvey struck out 11 Arizona Diamondbacks Thursday night, breaking the Mets franchise record for strikeouts for a player making his major league debut.

Harvey pitched five and a third scoreless innings, allowing only three hits while walking five as the Mets (48-51) beat the Diamondbacks (49-50), 3-1.

“When I was warming up I looked around and kind of took everything in,” Harvey said. “At that moment I really did believe that I was meant to pitch in the big leagues. It was everything I could have imagined. I just wanted to do everything I could to keep the team in a winning distance.”

The strikeout record was previously held by both Tom Seaver and Bill Denehy, who both struck out eight in their debuts.

The win snapped the Mets six-game losing streak.
