For the week ending July 21, the number of people filing for benefits fell to 353,000.  The previous week, claims stood at 388,000.

Thursday’s reported drop marks the largest decrease so far this month.  During the first week of July, claims sank by 26,000, but those gains were quickly erased when the figure jumped by 34,000 a week later.

The latest tally for the four-week average also went down, shrinking by 8,750 to 367,250.
