Krispy Kreme Celebrates 75th Birthday
Published at(NEW YORK) — Krispy Kreme is celebrating its 75th birthday with a bang.
From 7 to 10 p.m. Friday, the company will host a street party on Trade Street in Winston-Salem, N.C., with free hot original glazed doughnuts and live music. On Saturday, a Family FanFest from 9 a.m. to noon in Old Salem will offer more free doughnuts, coffee, rides and games.
Krispy Kreme was founded on July 13, 1937 in Winston-Salem, N.C., by Vernon Rudolph. The original recipe, bought from a New Orleans chef, was sold in a local grocery store. Rudolph began selling them from a window to passersby on the street. In the 1950s, the company opened its first plant and has expanded ever since.
In honor of its birthday, the company has released a birthday doughnut with frosting and sprinkles. A special promotion going on Friday offers a dozen original glazed doughnuts for 75 cents with the purchase of a dozen doughnuts.
