The first gold medal of the day went to China when Yi Siling won the women’s 10-meter air rifle shooting.  The men’s team archery had a shot at gold but Italy beat the U.S. by one point on its final shot, leaving the U.S. with silver.

The other silver of the day for the U.S. came in the 400 individual medley when Elizabeth Beisel beat out Li Zauanxu of China.

The women’s United States basketball team defeated Croatia 81-56 in their Olympic opener.  Tina Charles scored 14 points and Angel McCoughtry added 13 in the victory.  Both John Isner and Serena Williams won their respective opening matches on the tennis side at Wimbledon.

The U.S. women’s soccer team defeated Colombia, 3-0.
