“Every woman who believes decisions about our bodies and our health care should be our own is troubled Mitt Romney supports overturning Roe versus Wade,” the narrator says. “Romney backed a law that outlaws all abortion — even in cases of rape and incest.”

The 30-second spot also highlights Romney’s opposition to Planned Parenthood, including a call to end federal funding to the organization.

Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg said the ad egregiously mischaracterizes the Republican candidate’s position on abortion, noting that in a 2011 National Review op-ed Romney wrote that abortion should be allowed in “instances of rape, incest or to save the life of the mother.”

“It’s no coincidence that a day after a disastrous jobs report, the Obama campaign drops viciously negative and false ads against Gov. Romney desperate to change the subject,” Henneberg said in a statement. “The economy has gone negative on President Obama, so he has decided to go negative on Mitt Romney.”

The Obama ad begins airing Saturday in Florida, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Colorado and Nevada, a campaign official said.

The president’s re-election team has made a concerted effort to shore up support among women voters, a key Democratic constituency.

Last month, the Obama campaign aired the first in a series of women-specific TV ads, focusing on the first bill Obama signed into law — the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.  The effort is meant to “highlight President Obama’s commitment to issues important to women and their families,” the campaign said.
