Instead, the team decided to reward him with a three-year contract worth $27 million.

Quentin missed the first 49 games of the season with knee injury, but he has made his presence felt since making his Padres debut. He homered in five of his first six games with the team and has added some much needed offense.

“This is an amazing opportunity for me to stay and play in the city I grew up in,” Quentin said. “I believe in this organization and what they’re doing and I think they believe in me and I wanted to be a part of it.”

“I’m happy about it,” Padres manager Bud Black said. “I think it’s great for the Padres, great for the city, and great for Carlos.”

The 29-year old Quentin made his Major League debut originally with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006. He was acquired by the Padres during this past offseason in a trade with the Chicago White Sox.
