The Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings director wrote, “On behalf of New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Wingnut Films, and the entire cast and crew of The Hobbit films, I’d like to announce that two films will become three.”

The third film will be based on the book and supplemental materials author J.R.R. Tolkien penned in an effort to bridge the events in The Hobbit with the goings on in his darker follow-up, The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Jackson added, “It has been an unexpected journey indeed,” and in the words of Professor Tolkien himself, “a tale that grew in the telling.”

Jackson’s first Hobbit film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, opens on Dec. 14 and will be followed by The Hobbit: There and Back Again one year later.  The third Hobbit film is expected to be released in the summer of 2014.
