Downey, wearing a slick suit and one of Iron Man’s lighted gloves, strode through the crowd like a rock star to Luther Vandross’ “All My Love,” in a flashy entrance worthy of his beloved billionaire, genius, playboy, philanthropist character.

Other reveals from the panel included a teaser of an action scene in which Stark tests out armor that cocoons around him at will — and an attack on his home at the hands of The Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley. The actor also surprised scores of kids who were dressed like Iron Man, and posed for countless pictures with his hero’s shocked doppelgangers.

Writer-director Shane Black was also on hand, and cheekily promised Iron Man 3 won’t be like the panned Spider-Man 3, and said the half-finished film is going swimmingly. Co-star Don Cheadle was also there, as was Jon Favreau, former director and star of the first two movies, and co-producer and star of the third film.

“I feel like the proud grandfather who doesn’t have to change the diaper but gets to play with the baby,” Favreau quipped.

Iron Man 3 flies into theaters May 3, 2013.
