“Welcome Brandon Roy,” Timberwolves forward Derrick Williams tweeted. He wore Roy’s No. 7 last season. “#7 is all yours.”

Roy, 27, retired from basketball last December due to knee issues, but sources close to Roy say he is feeling fine and should be able to play around 20 minutes a game.

Roy can’t sign with his former team, the Portland Trail Blazers, because it used it’s team amnesty clause to take the remaining $68 million owed to Roy, off the books. He can’t sign with Portland again until the length of his old contract runs out after the 2014-2015 season.

During Roy’s five NBA seasons, he was a three-time all-star, won rookie of the year, and averaged 19 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 4.7 assists.

The deal can’t be officially finalized until July 11.
