Sharapova was last year’s runner up at Wimbledon and was trying to become the first woman to win the French Open and Wimbledon since Serena Williams did in 2002.

“I had chances, I didn’t take them,” said Sharapova after the match.  “A lot of the credit goes to my opponent, she played extremely well today.”

Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki sat in Lisicki’s guest box to see her take down the top-seeded Sharapova.

“Tennis is my passion, I love it from the bottom of my heart, and worked so hard for those moments,” Lisicki told ESPN.  “I love playing in Wimbledon and having the support of the crowd, it’s the most amazing thing in the world and that’s what I work hard for.”

Sharapova said she will use the loss as motivation and keep plugging away.
