Smoke Blocks Highway 26

(ATOMIC CITY) – The smoke from the Midway fire near Atomic City blocked a section of U.S. Highway 26 Thursday. The blaze, which has grown to nearly 9,000 acres, was sparked by lightning on Tuesday and was only 25 percent contained as of Thursday night. Crews spent much of the day conducting back burns in an effort to let the fire burn itself out. State transportation officials reopened the highway shortly before 6 p.m.
