Photo by Tom Dahlin/Getty Images(MANKATO, Minn.) — The Minnesota Vikings have placed running back Adrian Peterson on the active physically unable to perform (PUP) list to start training camp.

Even though Peterson put up a fight to the coaching staff, head coach Leslie Frazier believes that this decision was best for the team.

Peterson is only eight months removed from reconstructive surgery to repair the ACL and the MCL in his left knee, which were torn midway through the 2011 season.  Recovery from a surgery this severe normally takes much longer.

After being drafted with the seventh overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft by the Minnesota Vikings, Peterson was one of the best running backs in all of football.  He has rushed for over 6700 yards in his career to go along with 64 touchdowns.

Peterson can be removed from the PUP list at any time during camp and start practicing. In the meantime, running back Toby Gerhart will take all of the first team reps.
