Drug maker Eli Lilly & Co. announced Friday that, while the drug solanezumab did not slow mental decline in each of two phase 3 clinical trials, a positive effect of statistical significance was seen when results of the two studies were combined. The company said the effect was concentrated in people with mild cases of the illness, Health Day says.

Since neither trial met its anticipated outcome, approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is not a sure thing. The company, however, plans to continue to study the drug, which the Alzheimer’s Association viewed as good news, given that they can gain further insight into the effects of the drug over a longer period of time, according to Health Day.
