“Venus is such a great player and she won so many Grand Slams, so I’m very happy to beat here here,” said Kerber after the match.  “Everybody was against me but it doesn’t matter.”

“I just tried to focus on me, try to play my game plan, fighting every point until the last,” said Kerber.  “I’m very happy to be in the third round here.”

Williams had won at Flushing Meadows in 2000 and 2001 but would not make any excuses afterwards.

“I made 60 errors, it’s very difficult to win a match like that and I fought as hard as I could,” said Williams.  “Unfortunately I was fighting her and me.”

As for the crowd rallying behind Williams.

“I know this is not proper tennis etiquette, but this is the first time I’ve ever played here that the crowd has been behind me like that. Today I felt American, you know, for the first time at the U.S. Open,” Williams said. “So I’ve waited my whole career to have this moment and here it is.”
