Mills, along with two other coaches, were axed in what has been a difficult season for the franchise.  Mils was 76-86 in his first season as skipper, but then led Houston to a franchise-worst 56-106 last year on top of his record this year.

The Astros have shaved their payroll to $21.3 million after trading away high-priced veterans all summer and will now look for a new manager as well.

The Houston Astros have named Tony DeFrancesco interim manager for the rest of the 2012 season.  DeFrancesco was the manager of Houston’s Triple-A affiliate in Oklahoma City.

“When you get your butt kicked daily, the players feel it,” DeFrancesco said on Sunday. “They’re disappointed and the problem is, the next day they come to the stadium, and when you get your butt kicked on a daily basis, it’s hard to open the door because you lack confidence. Hopefully, with some of the new coaches here and myself, we can change the attitude.”
