Gossip website TMZ quoted sources close to the New Edition singer saying that he admitted himself to a treatment facility because “he realized he couldn’t do it on his own.”

Brown’s rep did not respond immediately to ABC News’ request for comment.

Brown has long struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. He was arrested for a DUI in March, one month after his ex Whitney Houston died. He pleaded no contest and was sentenced to probation and ordered to complete a 90-day alcohol education program.

Prior to that, Brown was charged with drug-related offenses, and in a 2010 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Houston memorably detailed the cocaine and marijuana she and Brown did together. Cocaine was also linked to Houston’s sudden death in February.

But Brown told the Today show in May that he was not the reason Houston’s gone. “I didn’t get high [on narcotics] before I met Whitney … I smoked weed and drank beer … but no, I wasn’t the one that got Whitney on drugs,” he said, adding that he hadn’t touched narcotics in seven years.

According to TMZ, Brown has entered rehab because he “decided that he needed help and wants to make the best out of the rest of his life for his children’s sake.”

Brown wed girlfriend Alicia Etheridge in Honolulu in June. Prior to their engagement in May 2010 Brown and Etheridge dated for three years following Brown’s split with Whitney Houston in 2007. The couple have one child together, Cassius, born in 2009.

He had one child with Houston, Bobbi Kristina Brown.
