Mathews underwent surgery last Friday and was given a prognosis of four-to-six weeks to recover from the injury. Even though members of the Chargers coaching staff think it’s a stretch to think Mathews will be healthy for the team’s Week 1 opener, Mathews is confident he’ll be able to suit up.

“I think I heal pretty fast,” Mathews told reporters, according to U-T San Diego. “I think I’ll be good in time to play against the Raiders. … I’m happy it happened now than against the Raiders. It’s better that it happened now, just to get it out of the way. It gives me a few weeks to recover and get back at it.”

Mathews has had trouble staying on the field since entering the NFL in 2010. He missed four games during his rookie season, and two last season.

In 2011, Mathews ran for 1,091 yards with seven touchdowns while also catching 50 passes for 455 yards.
