“Initially when they said we need to talk about it, I was a little worried of how long it could be,” Witten said Thursday after meeting with doctors on Tuesday. “Obviously being hopeful to not having to have surgery, I thought sooner than later. That’s a positive sign. Yeah, I was concerned, but ultimately we got good news from that standpoint.”

The seven-time Pro Bowler suffered the injury in the Cowboys first preseason game on Monday night against the Oakland Raiders when linebacker Ronaldo McClain made a tackle on him in the first quarter.

“It’s different,” Witten said when asked if he might be able to play through the pain. “It’s not something you can just fight through and dig deep. But it’s hard. It’s the first time for me to be in this situation. I’m staying optimistic and staying positive. We’re all hopeful to get the results we’re looking for.”

The Cowboys and Witten will know of his future after an examination in a week to 10 days.
