NFL? The Colts have been dealing with injuries to their defense all summer. Defensive tackle Brandon McKinney recently tore his ACL and linebacker Pat Angerer isn’t expected back for the team’s season opener.

Davis had spent his entire three-year career with the Dolphins after the team selected him in the first round in the 2009 draft. Last season, Davis recorded 43 tackles while also registering four interceptions. Despite his talent, his effort and conditioning reportedly had been questioned, which led to the team dropping him on the depth chart and out of the starting lineup.

“I think if Vontae were coming out in the 2013 draft, there’s no way he’d be there,” Colts head coach Chuck Pogano said. “A guy of his caliber, and his talent level and skill set, he wouldn’t be there in the second (round). You don’t find guys like this in the second.”

In 44 career games with the Dolphins, Davis had 148 tackles and nine interceptions.
