Now, the team has a bright future and Williams will likely be around to see the team’s potential come to fruition as the Hornets have agreed on a four-year extension with Williams.

In his first season in New Orleans, the team went just 21-45 in the first season in the post Chris Paul era. Despite the team’s struggles, they felt strongly enough to keep Williams on board to see out the team’s rebuilding process.

“The Hornets have a promising future and an exciting young nucleus,” Hornets executive vice president Mickey Loomis said. “It is our opinion that Monty is the perfect coach to develop and lead this group of talent going forward.”

Despite the teams shortcomings last season, they’ve had what many agree as a great offseason. They landed the top college prospect in Anthony Davis with the number one pick in NBA Draft, they also resigned guard Eric Gordon, and acquired Ryan Anderson as well as Robin Lopez. The team was also able to draft top guard Austin Rivers with the tenth pick in the draft as well.

Williams spent nine seasons in the NBA, retiring after the 2002-2003 season.
