Joan Rivers Starts Small Scuffle at California Costco Store
Published at(BURBANK, Calif.) — Comedienne Joan Rivers has made a career out of speaking her mind, so the 79-year-old wasn’t going to let a little thing like a ban by Costco stop her from hawking her new book.
Because of concerns over “offensive” material, the bulk retailer won’t carry Rivers’ latest book, I Hate Everyone…Starting with Me, which has spent more than six weeks on the The New York Times best-seller list. So Rivers took matters into her own hands on Tuesday, setting up shop at a Costco in Burbank, Calif.
Wearing sunglasses and holding a megaphone as she stood inside, Rivers signed copies of the publication for a crowd of eager fans. But not long afterward, cops responded to the scene and ordered Rivers to leave. She complied, and no charges were filed.
In response, Rivers told ABC News affiliate KABC-TV, “Costco, who sells condoms by the pallet, who sells Paula Deen books…which is not good for their customers’ health — they decided to ban my book.”
Rivers quipped, “This is a store that sells 300 rolls of toilet paper at the same time, and I say any customer that buys 300 rolls of toilet paper deserves a funny book to sit on the toilet and read.”
