For the week ending Aug. 4, the number of people filing for benefits dropped by 6,000 to 361,000, the agency reported Thursday.  The previous week, claims stood at 367,000.

The four-week average, meanwhile, increased by 2,250 to 368,250.

Last month’s unemployment report found that U.S. employers added 163,000 jobs in July, which exceeded economists’ expectations.  But the unemployment rate failed to hold steady, as was predicted, and climbed to 8.3 percent
