Kindle Fire Sold Out as Amazon Plans for Sept. 6 Launch of New Version

Matthew Staver/Bloomberg via Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Amazon's Kindle Fire has become one of the most popular tablets on the market in the past year. But you can't get one anymore, at least not for the next week or so.

Thursday Amazon announced that after nine months of its being on the market, its popular $199 Kindle Fire is no longer in stock. But, as you'd expect, a new version is on the way.

"Kindle Fire is sold out, but we have an exciting roadmap ahead. We will continue to offer our customers the best hardware, the best prices, the best customer service, the best cross-platform interoperability and the best content ecosystem," Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement.

Amazon has scheduled a press event in Santa Monica, Calif., next Thursday, Sept. 6, where the mega online retailer is expected to release the new 7-inch Kindle Fire, as well as new Kindle e-readers. Rumors have also hinted that the company might release a larger, 10-inch Kindle Fire.

According to Amazon, the Kindle Fire has been the No. 1 selling product on Amazon during the past year, capturing 22 percent of the tablet market.

The Kindle Fire spurred a new market of affordable, 7-inch tablets. Google, in partnership with Asus, released the Nexus 7 in June for $199, and it quickly became extremely popular. Apple is also rumored to release a smaller version of the iPad -- the so-called iPad Mini -- in October. But other companies, such as Sony, have said they don't plan to play in this lower-end space.
