Advisors for the GOP presidential nominee say they’re as much in the dark about that person’s identity as everyone else, although it’s possible they’re just being coy.

Eric Fehrnstrom, a senior advisor to Romney, admitted to ABC News, “I do not know.  I’m intrigued.  I had not heard that that there was going to be a mystery speaker, no.”

Other top members of Romney’s team — senior advisor Beth Myers, director of advertising Ashley O’Connor, and pollster Neil Newhouse — also claimed ignorance about a surprise guest speaking Thursday evening.

The “To Be Announced” speaker will take the podium before Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, who will do the honors of introducing Romney to the convention.

Plenty of names have been bandied about but virtually all of them will have already addressed the convention by the time Romney gets around to speaking.

The most intriguing possibility: 2008 vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, who wasn’t extended an invitation to Tampa, Fla.
