ESPN is reporting that the team and Stewart have agreed on a five-year contract worth $36.5 million, and could go as high as $42.5 million. Stewart will also receive $22.5 million guaranteed.

“We are thrilled to be able to extend Jonathan for five additional years,” Panthers general manager Marty Hunrey said in a statement. “He is a perfect fit for our organization. He is a playmaker who can make a difference in games and we have seen the impact he and DeAngelo Williams have had on our team.”

Stewart was drafted by the team with the 13th overall pick back in 2008. Even though he has had to split carries with Williams, Stewart has been a very effective running back during his four-year NFL career. He has averaged 4.8 yards per carry during his career, scored 26 touchdowns on the ground, while also catching three touchdowns.

This past season with just 142 carries, Stewart was still able to run for 761 yards with four touchdowns. He also caught 47 passes for 413 yards and one touchdown.
