Despite his past production, injuries have derailed Utley’s career. To help add on some more years to his career, Utley is considering moving over to third base.

Before the team’s game against the New York Mets Wednesday night, Utley was seen over at third base taking grounders to get a better feel for the position. Utley last played third base in 2002 while in Triple-A.

“I figured I’d give it a try just to get back over there, get my feet wet, just get a feel for the position again,” Utley said. “It could be an option for the future. It’s way too early to have an opinion either way on how it’s going to go. I might take some more ground balls in the future. But I think if I’m able to play over there, it could create some more flexibility as far as the organization is concerned.”

Utley was the National League Silver Slugger at second base for four straight years (2006-2009) but he’s been oft injured since then.

In 51 games this season, the 33-year old Utley is batting .255 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs.
