“I had it done before and I believe in that big time,” Ortiz said of the injection in which he also received in 2007 for a knee injury. “We didn’t get it done [earlier] because we thought that wasn’t needed in my case, but at this stage, at this point, seems like I gotta get through it. When I heard them talking about it this morning it made me happy.”

The eight-time All-Star was hitting .318 with 23 home runs, 60 RBIs before suffering the injury.

“There’s nothing that I need to have fixed for now,” Ortiz said on Monday. “That’s part of the reason I want to be careful with it because I don’t want to get to the point where I’m playing sore. If you’re sore you know that your body is telling you something. And if you continue [to play hurt] then it causes you to have surgery.”

Ortiz has said the shot works 60 to 70 percent of the time, but would not say whether or not he’d return this season.
