Rick Majerus To Miss Upcoming Season With Health Issue

(ST. LOUIS) – The University of St. Louis men’s basketball team will be without their leader for the upcoming season.

Billilkens head coach Rick Majerus will be taking a leave of absence for a health-related issue for at least the upcoming season.  School spokesman Brian Kunderman said that Majerus is currently hospitalized in California for an ongoing heart condition.

Assistant coach Jim Crews will take over the team for the 2012-13 season. They have not made a decision for the 2013 season.

“I appreciate what Rick has done to return SLU men’s basketball to national prominence,” said Rev. Lawrence Biondi, the school president. “I know that he would like to be here with his players and coaches this season, and all of us at SLU will keep Rick in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”

Last season, St. Louis went 24-8 in going to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2000. They lost in the third round.

Majerus has had a history of health problems, running into issues at Utah and USC; his last two coaching stops. He came out of retirement to take over at St. Louis. Overall, he has a 517-216 coaching record.
