(OAKLAND) — The Tampa Bay Rays released two-time All-Star outfielder Hideki Matsui at his request on Wednesday.
The Rays designated the 38-year-old Matsui last week after he batted just .147 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 34 games.
Matsui was named the World Series MVP in 2009 after batting .615 in the New York Yankees’ six-game victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.
