(ARLINGTON, Texas) — Minnesota Twins pitcher Scott Diamond thought he’d be sending a message to Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton when he threw at his head Thursday night. As it turns out, Hamilton got the last laugh as Diamond has been suspended six games by Major League Baseball.
Diamond threw at Hamilton in the bottom of the third inning. He was doing so as retaliatoin for Rangers pitcher Roy Oswalt hitting catcher Joe Mauer on the back in the top of the inning.
“I don’t think he was trying to hit me in the head,” Hamilton said on Friday night. “I just think the ball got away from him. But it got away from him and it was close. That’s probably the closest I’ve ever had to a pitch come to me where I could feel it go behind the back of my neck.”
The 26-year old Diamond is off to a fine start to his rookie season. In 20 starts, he is 10-5 with a 3.04 ERA.
Diamond will appeal the suspension.
