It turns out that instead of transferring schools, Mathieu has expressed interest in sitting out this season, enrolling in classes, and try to return to the team in 2013, according to ESPN.com.

Sources have told ESPN.com that Mathieu has not been ruled permanently ineligible so this has a chance of becoming a reality for Mathieu. Mathieu wants to stay with LSU because he has a “support system” in place and wants to get his life back on track.

The website is also reporting that since his dismissal, Mathieu has been “heartbroken” as well as “grieving.”

Before it came out that he was considering a return to LSU, Mathieu visited McNeese State and other FCS schools like Jackson State and Prairie View A&M.

Last season, Mathieu established himself as one of the best defensive players in the country. In his sophomore season, Mathieu registered 77 total tackles with two sacks and two interceptions. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist and won the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation’s best defensive player.
