“It’s huge for all American fans, it’s huge for the team, and it’s historical,” U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann told ESPN. “We were very well aware that we’ve never won here at the Azteca Stadium.  We told them before the game, this moment is for you, go and grab it.”

The United States had been 0-23-1 coming into Wednesday night’s game against El Tri in 75 years of games at Mexico. Goalie Tim Howard swiped away a 4-yard downward header in the 89th minute to preserve the shutout.

“A lot of grit and determination, we went out and played our hearts out tonight,” Howard told ESPN, who battled Mexican fans who pointed lasers at him throughout the game. “It’s not a loss to any of us that we made history. We played well and had to weather their storm most of the game and we did that.”
