While this may have come as a shock to some, Victor Conte thinks Cabrera is far from alone.

Conte was the founder of BALCO and spent time in jail for distributing steroids. While speaking to USA Today, Conte said there are many players in Major League Baseball using performance enhancing drugs.

“I’m not going to name names,” Conte said, “but I’ve talked to a lot of top players in Major League Baseball, and they tell me this is what they’re doing. There is rampant use of synthetic testosterone in Major League Baseball.”

“I would say maybe as much as half as baseball,” Conte added when asked how many players use PEDs.

Despite Conte’s claim, Major League Baseball strongly disagrees.

“There is no way Victor Conte would have information that would allow him to have any basis on that,” MLB Vice President Rob Manfred said, according to the paper. “He’s just making that up. It’s a guess.”

Cabrera was having a career year with the Giants, hitting .346 and led the Majors in hits as second in runs scored.
