The NFL has suspended Haggans three games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Haggans was facing a suspension after he served jail time in June after he plead guilty to DUI charges that stemmed from an incident back in April 2011.

“We were certainly aware that this decision was a possibility as we evaluated Clark prior to adding him on our roster,” 49ers general manager Trent Balke said. “Therefore, we are prepared to forward accordingly.”

A 13-year veteran, Haggans had spent the previous four seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. Despite his limited role with the team throughout the first two games of the season, Haggans was the 49ers’ only backup at the outside linebacker position.

“While we don’t agree with the league’s decision, we will abide by their ruling,” Haggan’s agent, Jeff Sperbeck, told the Bay Area News Group.

In 2011, Haggans recorded 46 tackles and one forced fumble.
