Actor Kal Penn Takes a Poke at Clint Eastwood During DNC Speech

Ethan Miller/Getty Images(CHARLOTTE, N.C.) -- Actor-turned-political activist Kal Penn addressed the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., Tuesday night, and took a jab at Clint Eastwood’s mock interview with an invisible President Obama during last week’s Republican National Convention.

Penn, whose credits include the Fox series House and playing Kumar in the Harold & Kumar films, addressed the crowd as an Obama supporter and former associate director in the White House Office of Public Engagement.

Penn told the audience, “I’ve worked on a lot of fun movies but my favorite job was having a boss who gave the order to take out [Osama] bin Laden and is cool with all of us getting gay married.  So thank you invisible man in the chair for that.”

Penn began his speech by saying, “I am honored to accept your nomination for president of the United states.  Wait, This is not my speech.  Prompter guy, can we pull up my speech?  This is awkward.”

A number of celebrities were spotted in the convention audience Tuesday night, including Black Eyed Peas member Will.i.am, Monk actor Tony Shahloub, actress Alfre Woodard, actor John Leguizamo and actor Wayne Knight, who played “Newman” on Seinfeld.

On Thursday, Kal Penn will be hosting the live online coverage of the Democratic National Convention at BarackObama.com.  In an online ad promoting the coverage, Obama telephone's Penn's Kumar character and his buddy Harold, played by actor John Cho.

The president is seen asking a person on the other end of the phone if they’re on board because he’s counting on them and trusting them.  The scene than switches to Harold and Kumar sitting on a couch watching TV surrounded by pizza and snacks.

When Kumar says the president just called, Harold replies, “Sweet,” and the two then laugh at something on the TV screen.
