(TEMPE, Ariz.) — Arizona Cardinals running back Beanie Wells will miss at least the next seven games with a extreme turf toe.

The 24-year-old Wells, injured the toe in last Sunday’s 27-6 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.

He has been placed on the NFL’s new injured reserve/designated to return list. The rule allows each team to place one player on the list, and allows the player to return to practice after six weeks and play in games after eight.

“It’s huge,” quarterback Kevin Kolb said of losing Wells. “He’s a big part of our team. He’s a nice counter to the rest of our backs, the way he runs. I know other guys will step up but it’s a huge loss.”

Ryan Williams is expected to become the main back with Wells injured. So far this season, Williams has rushed for 105 yards on 31 carries.
