As it turns out, the injury is not as bad.

Bears head coach Lovie Smith said that Forte suffered an ankle sprain, but not the dreaded high ankle sprain that can derail a player’s season in certain circumstances. Forte went from being out for an extended period of time, to not being ruled out for the team’s game on Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

“He looked pretty good today,” Bears head coach Lovie Smith said on Monday. “We’re not ruling him out or anything just yet. He has a long way to go. I don’t want you to start thinking he’ll be out there practicing tomorrow; he’s not. But we’re making progress.”

Forte is arguably the Bears’ best offensive player. He has accumulated at least 1,400 yards from scrimmage in each of his first four seasons.

During the offseason, Forte signed a four-year contract worth $32 million.
