Howard suffered the injury during practice on Thursday. He has been placed on season-ending injured reserve as a result.

This is a big blow for the Bengals defense. Howard was one of the Bengals’ best defensive players and led the team in tackles last season. Howard joined the team last season after spending his first five seasons in the NFL with the Oakland Raiders.

Howard had just nine tackles in 12 games for the Raiders in 2010, but Howard resurected his career with the Bengals. He had 99 tackles and a sack in 2011 with the Bengals. The 29-year old Howard will be an unrestricted free agent following the 2012 season.

To replace Howard, the team has signed linebacker Roddrick Muckelroy.
