Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — For most of the season, it looked like the St. Louis Cardinals would be without starting pitcher Chris Carpenter for the entire season due to injury. As it turns out, with less then 20 games left in the regular season, Carpenter might be on the verge of returning to the team.

Carpenter will throw a 90-pitch simulated game today as he recovers from thoracic outlet syndrome. If all goes well, Carpenter could join the team’s rotation as early as next week.

“I went into [surgery] strong enough and I knew that if I came out of it strong enough, I thought there was a chance,” Carpenter told Langosch. “My goal the whole time was to be prepared and let these guys know how I felt at the end of the season so they could go into the offseason knowing what they could count on me for next season.”

Carpenter hasn’t pitched since Game 7 of the World Series against the Texas Rangers. After experiencing numbness in his arms and neck during spring training, the team shut him down. His return to the team in 2013 was even unclear after having the surgery.

Carpenter is in his ninth season with the Cardinals, and has won two World Series titles with the team over that span.
