That’s right — September 4 marks the 40th anniversary of the iconic CBS game show, the current version of which debuted in 1972, hosted by Bob Barker from its debut until 2007, when current host Drew Carey took over.  However, the show actually debuted on television in 1956, hosted by Bill Cullen, and ended in 1965. There were also a handful of syndicated versions that lasted only a few years each.

The consecutive 40-year run of the present incarnation of The Price Is Right makes it the longest-running game show in U.S. television history.  The show is also one of the most imitated, with dozens of current and former versions airing in countries around the world.

In celebration of today’s anniversary, CBS is airing a special The Price Is Right featuring highlights and contestants from past shows.
