The 29-year-old tight end, who signed a one-year contract with the team Sept. 19, asked for his release and the Patriots granted his wish.

Winslow, who was brought in after tight end Aaron Hernandez went down with an ankle injury during Week 2, had one catch for 12 yards in his only game as a Pat.

Winslow has chronic knee pain, which may have been a factor in his decision.

The Patriots still have tight ends Rob Gronkowski, Daniel Fells and Michael Hoomanawanui on the roster, and New England hopes to get Aaron Hernandez back in a couple of weeks.
