“I’m a little sleepy but I am so thrilled to be here with all of you today,” she told cheering delegates at a meeting of the African-American Caucus.

“So how about that opening night, huh? I don’t know about you but the energy the enthusiasm that we saw last night made it clear that folks are pretty fired up,” she said. “But more importantly, last night truly set the stage for what’s at stake in this election and what we need to guide us forward for the next four years.”

Mrs. Obama repeated a vigorous defense of President Obama’s vision for the country and encouraged supporters to step-up their organizing efforts in key states.

“This election is about battleground state victories and if you don’t live in a battleground state, get to one,” she said.

“If you can afford it, write a check,” Obama added to applause. “And if you haven’t maxed out, max out…. But most importantly, make sure every single person you know within the sound of your voice, that you can touch” turns out to vote.

Obama rattled off statistics from the 2008 race, underscoring just how close the finish was in a handful of states. She says it will be even closer this time.

“We won Florida by 236,000 votes.  Do it again Florida… but while that might sound like a lot that’s just 36 votes per precinct,” she said. “And if you think that’s close, don’t forget we won North Carolina by just 14,000 votes. That’s just five votes per precinct. That’s just five people.”

“Never underestimate the power of what you can do as an individual,” she said.
