The vote means that restaurants, concession stands and workplace cafeterias are no longer allowed to sell sugary drinks larger than 16 ounces.

It’s a policy that sparked a nationwide outcry, but Dr. Deepthiman Gowda at Columbia University says banning the sale of large-sized non-diet soda, sweetened tea and other sugar-heavy drinks is necessary to combat obesity.

“We might see a generation of children that has a life expectancy shorter than their parents,” he said.

The beverage industry says health experts exaggerate the role of sugary drinks in the nation’s obesity problem and vows a fight.
